Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is coming to VR on the Oculus Quest 2

Oculus has announced that a VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is in development for the Oculus Quest 2.

The news was announced during an eventful Facebook Connect showcase last night. Details are slight, but there’s an official blurb. “Get a new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas as you experience (again or for the first time) one of gaming’s most iconic open worlds. This is a project many years in the making, and we can’t wait to show you more of it.”

Timing wise, it’s certainly an interesting move with the imminent release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. We don’t know if it’ll use assets from that version, the 2004 original or its own thing. Could it also be related to the GTA project Dr Dre is supposedly writing music for? We’ve currently no idea and, in fact, the blurb is really all we know, for now.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before we hear more. It’ll become the second mid-00’s game in recent months to get the VR treatment. Resident Evil 4 VR launched last week for the Oculus Quest 2 headset to almost universal acclaim.

There is one final wrinkle to this story, however. It transpires that by the time Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR comes out on the headset, it may not even be called the Oculus Quest 2. It was also announced later in the event that the company will be moving away from the Oculus Brand and becoming the Meta Quest in early 2022.

When we do hear more about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR, we’ll be sure to let you know.
